Our Lenten sermon series is entitled "Empty & Filled: Discovering the meaning and the power of Lent.
Our Wednesday night Bible study will be following the series and resume on March 11th at 6:30 pm.
This event has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus.
Dear First Church,
At 8pm on Thursday I received the following email from Bishop Palmer regarding the impact of COVID-19 (coronavirus):
Dear Partners in Ministry,
As you know and should expect, I have been receiving numerous communications and updates regarding the spread the COVID-19 virus. The sources of my information include the CDC, Ohio Department of Health and local healthcare systems.
All agree it is extremely important that we slow the rate of infection in order to allow our health care services to respond appropriately. If the infection rate increases too quickly, we may not have the health care support required for everyone needing treatment.
Times like these require unprecedented measures. I am strongly urging West Ohio Conference churches to cancel public worship for the next two weeks. This is not a decision I have taken lightly. These precautions are not only important for your own safety but for the health and welfare of the entire community. Please use your discretion regarding smaller group gatherings such as bible studies, etc. I am not asking you to cease operations completely but to avoid large group gatherings.
As we take precautions, let us must remember the poor and marginalized still depend on our churches. The need may increase due to company shutdowns and closures for any period of time. In the days to come, the conference website and social media channels will have additional resources for you and your local church.
In the service of Christ,
Bishop Gregory V. Palmer
Our public schools will be closed for an extended spring break. Additionally, Governor DeWine has asked that large gatherings be suspended. Mayor Sam Cramblit has declared Ironton in a State of Emergency. With that in mind, I have consulted with some of the leadership at our church and the consensus was to honor his request. All Sunday services, Wednesday night meetings, Church Meetings (including this Sunday’s Hospitality Training), and the Winter Jam Concert will be cancelled through March 22nd. We will listen to Health Professionals during that time and make decisions as needed beyond that date.
I will have an online worship service at our normal time for both Sunday morning services. Tune into our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/IrontonFirstUMC/) at 10:30 am to worship online with me. We are looking into the possibility of online giving during this crisis and beyond. We will provide information on that as it unfolds. The worship service will also be posted on our website after it is over (https://www.irontonfirstunitedmethodist.org/).
Since many in our worship community do not have Facebook, please share this with them as best you can – email, phone calls, etc. We want to communicate to everyone so they can properly prepare and still worship with us on Sunday.
The church office will remain open with only necessary staff required to come in. If you have any questions or concerns, call the church office – 740-532-1196, Pastor Sam – 740-352-8304 or send your questions to us via our Facebook page.
Keep our community and the world in your prayers. Stay safe, practice good hygiene and avoid shaking hands with others to stop this pandemic as soon as possible. Remember, God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
Yours in Christ
Monday evenings from 6 pm to 7 pm we will be hosting a Christian Yoga Class.
You will enter through the fellowship hall and the class will be held on one of our Sunday School rooms upstairs. This class is open everyone.
You will need to bring a yoga mat, bottle of water, maybe a little towel and a donation of $2 to $5 per person. We would like to pay our instructor a minimum of $20 per class. So to keep the cost down please invite your friends to join us.
The class will be 50 - 60 minute, that’s 10 minute centering and warm up, then 30-40 minutes movement and 10 minutes cool down/meditation.
Contact the church if you have more questions.
Our youth will be having a Purse Auction Fundraiser on March 29th after the morning worship service. A carry-in dinner will be provided. Everyone in the community is invited.
